MHDG's Dr. Edwin Chapman honored in Louisiana | February 2019

Dr. Chapman was a featured speaker at a #BlackHistoryMonth service in Shreveport, Louisiana, along with FBI Special Agent Perrye K. Turner, Sr. and medical legend Dr. Melissa M. Freeman of New York City, another doctor who is on the front lines in the fight against the opioid epidemic, and who developed the use of methadone to treat heroin addiction. At 92, she still practices medicine and treats opioid use disorder.

Agent Turner followed Dr. Chapman's speech, and talked about the drug crisis spreading across the US, reaching American kids and the elderly alike. "The problem is spreading, it's spreading rapidly, as Dr. Freeman and Dr. Chapman discussed," he said. "And it's going to take a comprehensive approach: law enforcement, medical professionals... We have to continue to have a dialogue and identify solutions."

Dr. Chapman, Dr. Freeman, and Agent Turner received plaques commemorating February 17, 2019 as "Freeman / Chapman / Turner Day" in Shreveport.
